Take Action: Summer for Fair Taxes

This summer the Texas House Committee on Property Tax Relief and Appraisal Reform is coming to a hearing room near you!

When they come to your town, let them know Texas needs property appraisal reforms that treat all homeowners fairly, provide transparency, and ensure a reliable way to fund education and other public investments.

Send us an email at info@leaderslisten.org if you might be interested in sharing your views with the Committee or helping find others to testify when it comes to your town.

Here are the details for the next hearing.  Each hearing begins at 1:00 pm with "invited testimony" followed by "public testimony." The Committee's hearing schedule for the rest of the summer is the following:

July 1 - Bexar County (San Antonio City Council)
July 8 - Tarrant County (UTA College Hall Rm. 100)
July 15 - Jefferson County (Lamar University John Gray Auditorium)
August 12 - Lubbock County (Texas Tech International Culture Center)

August 19 - Harris County (TBA)
August 26 - El Paso County (El Paso Community College Board Room)

How do we get a fair, transparent, and reliable system? Here are five proposals to consider:

1. Ensure all Texans are treated fairly by requiring disclosure of sales prices or other information necessary for more accurate appraisals.

2. Improve equity by creating a state office to set and oversee uniform standards for appraising properties and licensing of chief appraisers and tax consultants.

3. Ensure home affordability by allowing homeowners to defer all or part of their property taxes at a lower interest rate of 5% and educating homeowners on this right.

4. Value homes on their use as homes rather than as real estate speculation.

5. Improve transparency by simplifying how property tax payers are informed about upcoming changes to their property tax rates.
